Paynes Prairie Horses 1
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a place unlike anywhere else in Florida. Established as Florida's first state preserve in 1971, the prairie is home to wild roaming horses and bison. Along with nearly 300 species of bird. I went out there hoping to photograph the bison or the horses. No bison that day, but eventually I came across two horses, a mother and her young one. I spent close to two hours with them, slowly working closer. Watching how they moved through the prairie, sometimes they stopped and they looked back at me. Then, just before sunset, they slipped into the thick canopy along the edge. I followed their movement and found an opening where only their heads were visible, looking back at me. What I love is that it's not just horses in an open field. That canopy created a kind of natural window around them. A portrait within a landscape. A frame within a frame
