Cat Island 1

Cat Island 1

Bald Cypress trees are perfectly adapted to the wetland environment of Cat Island, thriving in the swampy, waterlogged soil of the Atchafalaya Basin. Their roots often stand exposed above the water in the form of the "knees," which help the tree breathe in oxygen-rich environments. These trees can grow to heights of up to 100 feet, with some of the oldest trees on the island being several hundred years old.
